The Aspidistra elatior is a tough and low-maintenance house plant, also known as the cast iron plant or bar-room plant. Native to Japan and Taiwan, and it's been a popular houseplant for centuries and it's probably the hardest house plant on the planet - virtually indestructable.
Aspidistra elatior is a rhizome-forming perennial that can grow up to 6 feet tall and wide. It has glossy, dark green leaves that are resistant to drought and pests and has been known to flower so you might be lucky. The plant is also tolerant of low light conditions, making it a great choice for homes with limited windows or north facing windows. It's also ideal if you have a cold bedroom as it can stand temperatures as low as 10C (and it's also pet safe).
Aspidistra elatior is a very low-maintenance plant and slow growing. It only needs to be watered occasionally, and it can go for weeks without sunlight! Not many plants can say that. So if you're looking for a plant that you can set and forget, the Aspidistra elatior is a great option.
